Industrial Wastewater Management
The HPS/XCEED Environmental Solutions Group has a broad and diverse resource base to provide customers with value-added services and solutions for the monitoring and treatment of water streams. Our broader focus also includes specialized air stream knowledge as well. The model for our solutions and services is based upon a flexible methodology to meet your needs. We can engage at any point in the process from audits, treatability, and analytical services through solution development, implementation, and long term customer support.
Audits, Treatability, and Analytical Services
We've completed evaluations of water and wastewater treatment problems, helped characterize the components in water streams, and defined processing options for those streams through treatability studies at laboratory, pilot, and demonstration scale methods and facilities. This range of capabilities has provided customers with confidence around scale-up and economic decisions.
Wastewater Characterization and Analysis
We have employed use of the extensive analytical capabilities at the Honeywell/UOP Technical center in Des Plaines, IL. These capabilities include the characterization of waste streams for both inorganic and organic pollutants:
- Atomic Adsorption and ICP analysis is available for metal species.
- Elemental analysis is available for C:H:N:O:S:P determination.
- Anions and Cations can be determined by Liquid Chromatography as well as wet chemical analyses.
- GC/MS capabilities exist for characterization and identification of unknown organic constituents
- Particle size analysis for the particle distribution and characteristics in wastewater samples.
- Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) and Total Organic Carbon (TOC) analyze wastewaters for overall organic content and strength.
These methods have enabled us to characterize waste streams for metals and organic constituents and determine their physical and chemical states. For example, we have analyzed particles in a waste stream so that their chemical composition (organic/inorganic), size distribution, etc. could be determined. This information enabled the selection of the most effective and cost effective treatment options for a particular waste stream.
Treatability Studies
A complete characterization and analysis of the customer's waste stream have allowed the selection of appropriate treatment options. Treatability studies, conducted at Honeywell PAI's Des Plaines laboratory, enable verification of these treatment options to cost effectively remediate particular waste stream components. The effectiveness and cost efficiency of various options is determined by the following:
- Chemical precipitation, flocculation and separation: We have considerable experience with the use of chemical precipitants and flocculants to remove a variety of inorganic and organic components of waste streams. This may include the use of chemical oxidants such as peroxide or permanganate to oxidize and precipitate specific metals and the use of organic flocculants to increase the density and settle-ability of precipitated metal complexes in clarification devices.
- Lab scale evaluation and comparison of different clarification options is conducted at The Des Plaines Laboratory. This includes the use of organic polymers and inorganic additives to break oil/water emulsions for the separation of organic and aqueous phases and the bench scale testing of Dissolved Air Floatation or emulsion breaking and solids separation.
- Lab scale testing can also be done on membrane systems for fine solids removal as well as the effectiveness of coarse and fine screens to remove solids of particular size and density characteristics
- The effectiveness of centrifugation for the breaking of emulsions, oil/water separation and solids removal can be determined using bench scale lab centrifuges.
- Bench scale biodegradability and biotreatment studies also provide an evaluation of biological treatment process to remove specific wastewater constituents to below their mandated levels or to meet specific discharge limitations on parameters such as BOD, TSS, ammonia, etc.
- Bench scale studies on the effectiveness of chemical oxidation systems such as Fenton's reaction, UV/peroxide treatment, permanganate oxidation, ion exchange and carbon adsorption can also be conducted at Honeywell PAI's Des Plaines Laboratory. This will allow a confirmation of the effectiveness of these treatments options as well as provide important data for full-scale system design.
Solution Development
Depending on your needs, we can provide services around complete solution development and related documentation.
Based on an understanding of the process and stream characterization, solutions have been defined through examination of "up stream" processes and unit operations to minimize and avoid downstream treatment or to modify aspects of the waste or wastewater characteristics through process treatment. Solution technologies employed on projects have included primary, secondary, and tertiary unit operations including chemical and biological treatment:
Primary:
Filters
Dissolved Air Flotation
Chemical pretreatment
Secondary:
Aerobic Fixed Film Reactors
Anaerobic Digesters
Tertiary:
Sand Filters
Carbon Absorption
Finally, our standardized and structured project delivery methodology assures any and all responsibilities assigned to us are executed within scope, schedule, and budget.
